With age, the natural balance between the formation of deleterious free radicals and their neutralization by anti-oxidants is destroyed, as a result of the progressive decline in anti-oxidant levels in tissues with age, leading to aging and the onset or aggravation of health problems.
The massive intake of these anti-oxidants in elderly subjects is aimed at:
- maintaining optimal brain function,
- extending life expectancy by helping to maintain immune defenses, kidney and joint tissue condition, and good cardiac function.
While the prevention of ageing (however unavoidable) is the preferred indication, SOFCANIS Canin Senior can boast an antioxidant activity that is always favorable after serious problems, in association with the appropriate treatment.
Coenzyme Q10 is a powerful antioxidant that facilitates energy production by the mitochondria and plays an essential role in the proper functioning of heart tissue and the maintenance of cognitive capacity. It has a sparing effect on vitamin E utilization and synergizes its stimulating effect on immune function.

Vitamin E's essential action is to protect cell membrane phospholipids from peroxidation: it plays an active role in membrane structure, forming complexes that stabilize it and prevent highly destructive chain reactions. It acts in synergy with other antioxidant systems, including the enzymes glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase.
Selenium is necessary for the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which eliminates peroxides.
Vitamin E and selenium deficiency leads to damage to the cell walls of muscle fibers and the membranes of intracellular organelles (including mitochondria).
Vitamin C, which regenerates vitamin E, is not stored in the body, making a daily intake essential.
It protects cells by participating in the degradation of oxygenated free radicals and preserves tissue vitamin E.
Arginine, independently of its positive effect on muscle tissue, prevents the depletion of coenzyme Q10 in the heart.
